What is it?
A herringbone barrel is a barrel specifically designed for pins
, nails and similar objects that require barrel barrel plate.
What is the difference between a herringbone and a regular barrel?
A herringbone barrel is double drilled at 45 degrees from both
sides , this forms a 90 degree internal bend within the perforation , stopping
the item to be plated from protruding thru the barrel.
Can I get a herringbone barrel for my line?
Herringbones can be built for any type of horizontal plating
barrel line , from portable to extra large.
Why not use these for all of plating barrel needs?
First , a herringbone barrel is more expensive than a standard
barrel , second , because of the 90 degree bend, they do not plate as fast
as a regular barrel. Third , a herringbone barrel can become clogged if
parts with excess "chad" are processed , requiring stripping to clean out
the holes.
Why are herringbones so expensive?
Herringbones require double drilling as stated above , this
means a minimum of twice as much time in drill. Setup of the machine is
quite extensive , as accuracy is an absolute must. Tooling is more expensive
, and the machines must be slowed down for accuracy.
Do other manufacturers make herringbone barrels?
As far as we know , one other manufacturer has herringbone drilling
capability , we have produced herringbone panels for other manufacturers
in the past , and will continue to do so in the future.
